What is the ruling on combining Dhuhr and Asr prayers while traveling?

2:14 PM

A

According to Twelver Shia jurisprudence, it is permissible (and in some opinions, preferable) to combine Dhuhr (Zuhr) and Asr prayers while traveling. This is known as jam' al-salatayn (combining two prayers).

The Ruling: When a person is considered a musafir (traveler) — meaning they intend to travel at least 8 farsakhs (approximately 44 km) — they are obligated to shorten (qasr) their prayers. The four-raka'ah prayers (Dhuhr, Asr, and Isha) become two raka'ah each.

Combining the Prayers: Shia jurisprudence permits combining Dhuhr and Asr at either of their times without the need for a specific excuse (unlike the Sunni position). Most Shia scholars consider it permissible at all times, whether traveling or not.

Conditions for Traveler's Prayer: 1. The journey must be at least 8 farsakhs (one-way or combined) 2. The traveler must not intend to stay in a place for 10 or more days 3. The journey must not be a sinful journey (safar al-ma'siyya) 4. The traveler must pass the hadd al-tarakhkhus (the point where the city is no longer visible)
